Passenger Ferries from Gibsons to Vancouver Are Coming!

A major step toward improved transportation for Bowen Island and the Sunshine Coast is on the horizon, plans for a new all-electric passenger ferry were announced late February. The proposed service, set to launch as early as 2027 from Coal Harbour, will provide a direct connection between downtown Vancouver, Bowen Island, and Gibsons, offering a faster, greener, and more reliable alternative to the existing ferry system. This initiative aims to reduce travel times, ease demand on vehicle ferries, and support economic growth in our coastal communities.

The fully electric vessels are expected to transport 1,000 passengers daily, removing approximately 500 car trips and reducing emissions equivalent to 8 million kilometers of driving per year. If approved this project could significantly enhance connectivity, lower commute costs, and revitalize marine-based transit in the region—all while ensuring convenient travel between the mainland and the Sunshine Coast.

Could we see a significant uptick in commuter residents calling the coast home once this route opens up? Its very possible! Let me know your thoughts in the comments or if you have any questions.
